Gin Buyer's Guide
Margaret River Gin Distillery Buyer's Guide | West Winds Gin
As one of Australia's Best & Most Awarded Distilleries, we know a thing or two about what it really takes to make great tasting gin. Our Cowaramup Gin Distillery in the Margaret River region is the spiritual home of The West Winds Gin, but we also use native Australian Botanicals from across our great land to create many different, but equally interesting, styles of gin. Why not discover for yourself how our Margaret River Gin Distillery produces not only local Margaret River Gin but gins made with Australian Botanicals that have helped win international acclaim on the world stage for all Australian Gin Producers.
The Sabre is our London Dry Gin with citrus freshness
The West Winds Sabre is a uniquely Australian take on a traditional London Dry style gin. The flavours in this bright, aromatic gin are led by an undercurrent of Citrus with a dominance of juniper, followed by the classic Coriander Seed. The addition of Wattle Seed adds a depth to the mid palate and introduces a creamy texture to the gin.
Perfect as a classic G&T with lemon to release the intricacies of this uniquely styled gin.
The Cutlass is our New World Aromatic Gin with a savoury character
The Cutlass is a beautifully aromatic gin with a unique Australian character. It combines traditional juniper alongside some uniquely Australian elements like Cinnamon Myrtle and Australian Bush Tomato. Handcrafted small batch is the key to its delicacy. The introduction of Australian Bush Tomato pairs up with an increase in Coriander Seed to produce a headstrong but beautifully aromatic gin.
Serve with Tonic and garnish with a sliver of Green Capsicum or Cherry Tomato.
The Broadside is our Navy Strength Gin with a hint of Margaret River sea salt
The boldest of the West Winds fleet, The Broadside is a Navy Strength gin, made to honour the most brazen, aggressive and fearless of naval war tactics where warships released a close-range barrage of firepower from every gun along one side of the hull. This Navy Strength gin is as bold as this manoeuvre.
Its intensity of flavour comes from the delicious Sea Parsley seasoned with Margaret River sea salt. The Broadside Gin was likely the first spirit in the world to incorporate filtered seawater. The Broadside’s higher alcohol percentage amplifies the aroma of the botanicals and is a perfect example of what high proof spirits can offer.
Tastes damn fine with tonic, ice and a slice of pink grapefruit.
The Wild Plum is Flavoured Gin reminiscent of a Sloe Gin
Australia’s most awarded flavoured gin, The Wild Plum Gin, is made with native Davidson Plums and Sloe berries, and the gin has been designed to have a warm and earthy backbone to support these unique Australian flavours. With its tart finish coming from the Davidson Plums, you’ll also discover a cozy sweetness thanks to Banksia Honey and sloe berries, all perfectly balanced out with robust Citrus notes.
This is some of the finest liquid using our native flavours alongside traditional gin aromas, and is best served long with soda or tonic and garnish with an orange wedge for a simple refresher, it's also perfect for cocktails.
The Pinque Rosé Gin is our Sweet Spiced Gin without the sugar
Our Pinque Rosé Gin derives its name from the 17th century sailing ships with a very narrow stern, flat bottoms, and shallow draught - affectionately known as Pinks. Their versatility, much like The West Winds Pinque Rosé Gin, was heralded by merchants and the navy as being the perfect companion for almost any occasion.
Pinque has been produced utilising the fantastic characters of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Margaret River region. The incorporation of Cabernet Sauvignon not only gives the gin its beautiful Rosé colour, but also adds to the red berry fruit character of the gin.
A ‘serious’ pink gin that is all about gin flavour and not sugar (!), utilising botanicals such as Strawberry Gum Leaves, Vanilla Pod, Cinnamon Quill, Lemon Myrtle and Orange Peel with a backbone of red berry fruit from the addition of the Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Pinque gin has a lifted perfumed nose with red berry, sweet spice, and a hint of orange, with underlying aromas of juniper and Citrus add balance and depth. The palate is flavour some and plump, with strawberry fruit freshened up with a citrus backbone and finishing with soft vanilla characters.
Mix with your favourite tonic and garnish with a slice of orange for your perfect G&T.
The Sur Lie is a Barrel-Aged Gin with nutty wattleseed and oak touches and a creamy mouthfeel
The West Winds Sur Lie Gin is a pairing of two Margaret River-based producers, Fish Bone Wines and the home of The West Winds Distillery. Aged 12 months on Chardonnay lees in a barrel, this gin has a creamy mouth feel with subtle native Australian wattleseed and Oak touches. Aging the gin not only in Chardonnay barrels, but to also incorporate the use of Chardonnay Lees into the mix, creates an exceptionally smooth and rounded gin with extra texture and palate weight similar to that of a Chardonnay wine.
The name ‘Sur Lie’ translates literally to ‘Aged on Lees’, a term used in French wine making.
Best served as a dry Martini (5 x parts Gin, 1 x part Dry White Vermouth) and small sprig of rosemary
