It was a night to remember in Perth on August 3 when the winners were announced for the Perth Royal Agricultural Society of WA Distillery Awards.
Australia’s most awarded gin distillery – The West Winds Gin – stayed true to type and scooped a swag of awards, including Gold for its extraordinary flavoured gin, The Wild Plum Gin. Made with native Davidson plums and sloe berries, the gin has warm and earthy backbone to showcase the uniquely Australian flavours – in short, it’s a sloe gin but not as you know it. Always a sell-out with each annual vintage, the 2022 version is now available and now adds a Gold medal to its award’s cabinet.
There were also top honours for The West Winds Broadside in the Navy Strength/Distillers Cut category. The boldest of the West Winds’ fleet of gins, The Broadside is an intense spirit with the trademark addition of Australian native botanicals (in this case, Sea Parsley and Margaret River Sea Salt) to elevate it above being a mere bruiser of a gin.
The West Winds Gin collection was well-represented across a range of other categories, with medals for The West Winds Sabre (Silver), The West Winds Sur Lie (Bronze), The West Winds Pinque Rose Gin (Silver).
Sister spirits in the Tailor-Made Spirits Company family also performed exceptionally well. AVOSH Australian Premium Vodka won a Silver medal in the Pure Vodka category while the West Winds Distillers Whiskey won a Silver medal in the Single Malt Whisky categories.
Ant Reynolds, head distiller, was thrilled with the medal count and cited the team’s determination to create a distinctly Australian spirit with each and every bottle that comes out of the company’s stills.
“This was a great night for Tailor-Made and in particular for The West Winds Gin,” he said. “We’re looking forward to opening our new distillery venue in Cowaramup in the near future so visitors can experience for themselves our gins, vodkas and whiskys for themselves.”
